Description

Introducing the Japanese Stainless-Steel Hori Hori Garden Knife – a multi-purpose tool designed for serious gardeners, bonsai hobbyists and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Crafted in Japan, this superb tool brings together the functions of a trowel, saw, knife and depth-gauge in one.

The concave stainless steel blade features a straight sharpened side plus a serrated edge for cutting fibrous roots and slicing through compacted soil. A pointed tip drives easily into earth, clay and root balls, while the depth markings etched on the blade allow precise spacing when planting or transplanting.

Paired with a smooth hardwood handle that gives firm, comfortable grip, and a protective leather (or synthetic) sheath that secures the blade safely at your belt or tool-bag, this Hori Hori is built to last. Whether you’re dividing perennials, re-potting bonsai, weeding between rows, or digging bulbs, this tool gives you control, accuracy and confidence.

Made in Japan by a specialist forging workshop, it embodies the same workmanship you expect from premium hand-forged garden tools. With proper care it will serve reliably for years of gardening.

Key features at a glance:
- Hardened stainless steel blade with dual edge (straight + serrated)
- Depth markings in mm/cm (and possibly inches) for precise planting
- Concave profile to scoop soil
- Hardwood ergonomically shaped handle
- Strong tang & ferrule for durability
- Included sheath for safe carry and storage

Maintenance

• After each use, rinse or wipe off soil and moisture. Dry thoroughly.
• Even though this blade is stainless steel, to prolong its life apply a thin coat of light machine oil or camellia oil to the metal surface (especially if you work in wet or salty environments).
• Keep the blade sharp: hone the straight edge periodically with a fine stone or diamond sharpener. Avoid damaging the serrated edge; for root work the serration stays effective longer.
• Store with sheath on and away from moisture. Hang or place in a dry tool rack rather than leaving in soil or outdoors overnight.
• Avoid using the tool as a prying crowbar beyond its design purpose—over-levering may stress the tang or handle.
• If the hardwood handle loosens, tighten ferrule if possible or apply wood glue inside the handle socket.
• Re-oil the handle occasionally (with wood conditioning oil) to prevent drying or cracking in outdoor conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a “Hori Hori” knife?

The term “Hori Hori” comes from Japanese (hori = “to dig”) and typically refers to a digging knife or soil knife used in gardening, bonsai work and other outdoor tasks.

Is the blade stainless steel or carbon steel?

This particular model is stainless steel, offering superior corrosion resistance compared with carbon steel options. Some Hori Hori knives use carbon steel for extreme edge retention but require more maintenance.

What tasks can this tool perform?

Digging small holes, planting bulbs or seedlings, pruning roots, cutting twine, dividing perennials, weeding, edging beds. Its dual-edge design gives cutting and slicing power as well as digging.

Is it suitable for bonsai repotting?

Yes — for bonsai work the compact size (around 300mm overall length) and precision blade allow careful root work and transplanting, especially in containers. However, very fine trunk wiring or delicate root cleaning may still require dedicated bonsai tools.

How do I know the depth I’m digging to?

The blade has etched depth-markings (in mm/cm) so you can gauge how deep you are inserting the blade or planting a bulb/seed.

What is the difference between this and a typical garden trowel?

The Hori Hori combines multiple functions (knife + saw + digging tool) in one – the concave blade, serrated edge, depth scale and pointed tip extend its utility far beyond a standard trowel.
