Are the tools ready to use out of the box?

Edges arrive sharp, but you’ll get best results after a quick hone (e.g., 1000 → 3000/4000 → 6000–8000) and basic setup. For planes, lightly true the sole if needed and set the blade/chipbreaker; Japanese saws are ready to cut with no setting required.

What maintenance and sharpening do you recommend for these kits?

Use a 1000 grit stone for shaping, a 3000–4000 for refinement, and a 6000–8000 for finishing, plus a flattening plate. Wipe tools dry after use and protect with a thin coat of camellia or light mineral oil. A rust eraser is handy for spot cleaning.
