Description

This vintage Japanese ryoba pull saw is a strong example of the older sawmaking style that many collectors and serious users look for. It features a pre-1980s hand-forged carbon steel blade with a forge-welded tang, hand-set teeth, visible yellow heat treatment and a hand-chiselled signature at the neck.

Unlike many later machine-made saws, this piece still shows the character of traditional workshop production. The forge-welded tang is one of the clearest signs of older construction, while the hand-set teeth and blade finish reflect manual work rather than later high-volume manufacturing methods. The blade also shows the visible yellow heat treatment typical of eastern Japan, often associated with older Japanese saws of this type.

This is a double-edged ryoba, giving you two tooth patterns on one blade for different cutting tasks. One side is suited to rip work with the grain, while the other is for crosscutting across the grain. That makes it a practical choice for joinery, general woodworking and anyone who wants the feel of an older Japanese saw rather than a modern replaceable-blade model.

As with all vintage saws, light surface marking, patina and signs of age are part of the appeal. These are not defects to hide. They are part of what separates an older hand-finished saw from a modern production tool.

For buyers who value older Japanese toolmaking, this is the type of saw that is getting harder to find: pre-1980s, forge-welded, hand-set and still carrying the evidence of how it was made.

Maintenance

Keep the blade clean and dry after use. Wipe lightly with camellia oil or a similar rust preventative before storage. Store in a dry place and avoid twisting the blade in the cut. As a vintage hand-set saw, it should be used with care and sharpened only by someone familiar with traditional Japanese saw teeth.

Condition / NOS Disclaimer

This is a vintage Japanese saw, not a modern reproduction. Minor surface marking, patina, storage wear and small irregularities from age are to be expected. Please review photos carefully, as they form part of the description.

VISIBLE AGEING NOTES
  • This vintage saw shows honest workshop ageing consistent with its age. The blade has light pitting, scattered dark staining and surface marks, with visible yellow heat treatment colour and hand-finished grinding lines still present. These cosmetic signs do not define the saw’s value negatively in this case. They are part of what confirms its age, making method and working history.
IDEAL USE

Ideal for buyers who want an older Japanese ryoba for woodworking, collecting or appreciating traditional hand-forged sawmaking details no longer common on later production models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a modern replaceable-blade saw?

No. This is a vintage Japanese ryoba with an older style hand-forged blade and forge-welded tang.

What does ryoba mean?

Ryoba means double-edge. One edge is used for rip cutting with the grain and the other for crosscutting across the grain.

What makes this saw different from later saws?

Key older details include the forge-welded tang, hand-set teeth, visible heat treatment and hand-chiselled signature.

Can this saw be resharpened?

Yes, in principle, but it should only be sharpened by someone experienced with traditional Japanese saw teeth.

Are the marks on the blade a defect?

No. Light patina, spotting and age marks are expected on a vintage saw and are part of its character.
