Description

Vintage 240mm Japanese dozuki for longer controlled joinery cuts

This vintage 240mm dozuki is a traditional Japanese backed saw from unused old stock. The longer blade gives more reach than a 210mm dozuki while keeping the stiff-backed format used for fine joinery, shoulder cuts, box making and clean controlled cuts.

The blade is hand-forged and heat-treated carbon steel, not a modern disposable replaceable-blade type. Visible forge-welded construction, sen scrape marks and small hammer marks are part of the appeal: they show older Japanese sawmaking methods rather than a fully machine-finished modern blade.

240mm vs 210mm dozuki

  • Choose 240mm for more reach, longer strokes and furniture-scale joinery work.
  • Choose 210mm for tighter control, smaller joinery and a more compact feel.
  • If you prefer the smaller size, compare the Vintage Japanese Dozuki Saw 210mm.

Dozuki vs ryoba

  • Choose dozuki for fine joinery, shoulder cuts and controlled detail work.
  • Choose ryoba for more general-purpose ripping and crosscutting in one double-edged saw.

What to understand before buying

This saw is unused old stock, but it is still a vintage item. Buyers should expect age, patina and storage-related cosmetic variation consistent with long-term storage. It is not sold as modern factory-fresh retail stock.

Care expectations

This is a traditional carbon steel saw. Keep the blade dry, wipe with camellia oil or light tool oil after use and store out of humidity. Proper sharpening and tooth setting require experience with Japanese saw geometry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this saw unused?

Yes. This saw is NOS, new old stock, meaning it is old stock that remained unused. It is not second-hand, but it is still a vintage item and may show signs of age and storage.

Is this a resharpenable blade?

Yes. This is a traditional hand-forged carbon steel blade, not a modern impulse-hardened disposable blade. It can be resharpened, although proper sharpening and tooth setting require experience.

What does the forge-welded tang indicate?

The forge-welded tang is a traditional construction detail where the softer tang is welded to the harder blade body by heat and hammering. It is associated with older hand-forged sawmaking and was largely replaced by electrical welding in later production.

What is the yellow colour on the blade?

The yellow tone is consistent with temper colours left by traditional heat treatment after quenching. This is part of the blade’s making process, not a decorative coating. This is an informed interpretation based on traditional Japanese sawmaking methods and the visible finish on the blade.

Why are there scrape and hammer marks on the blade?

Traditional Japanese saws were hand-finished and tuned. Visible scrape marks are consistent with sen finishing, while small hammer marks are consistent with straightening and tensioning work on the blade. These are part of the manufacturing process, not necessarily defects.
