Description

This vintage 240mm Japanese ryoba is a traditional double-edged saw made for clean, controlled hand-cutting in timber. One edge is set up for crosscutting across the grain, while the other is shaped for rip cuts along the grain, giving you two useful cutting patterns in one compact saw.

The blade has the slim, elegant form associated with older Japanese woodworking saws, paired with a wrapped handle that still gives the tool a very honest, workshop-made feel. The proportions are excellent: long enough to track smoothly, but still light and direct in the hand. For anyone who appreciates older Japanese tools, it has the kind of presence that newer disposable-blade saws often lack.

The black blade cover appears to read “registered trademark Rinkyusaku” along with wording that translates roughly to “highest grade”, “selected”, and “professional use”. I have not been able to verify a reliable published history for the name, so it is best treated as an original trade mark or brand marking rather than a confirmed maker biography.

Based on its construction, packaging, and overall style, this saw appears to predate the mainstream shift toward modern replaceable-blade Japanese saws. That makes it an appealing piece for collectors, users of traditional tools, or anyone building a kit around older hand-forged and hand-finished Japanese woodworking tools.

This is a genuine vintage saw, so light surface marks, patina, and age-related wear should be expected. Please review the photos closely for condition.

Maintenance

Keep the blade clean and dry after use and apply a light coat of camellia oil or similar protective oil if storing for extended periods. As with many vintage Japanese saws, sharpening should only be carried out by someone experienced with Japanese saw tooth geometry, as improper filing can quickly ruin the cutting pattern.

Condition / NOS Disclaimer

This is a genuine vintage Japanese saw, not a modern reproduction. It appears to be old stock and unused or very lightly used, but it may show minor storage wear, light surface marks, patina, or age-related cosmetic variation from decades of storage. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description.

VISIBLE AGEING NOTES
  • Light surface marking and mild cosmetic ageing are visible on the blade, along with minor handling and storage marks consistent with an older unused tool. The handle wrap also shows small age-related imperfections. Nothing visible suggests hard modern workshop use, but this is still a vintage item and should be bought with that in mind.
IDEAL USE

Ideal for joinery, general woodworking, and buyers who want a traditional Japanese saw with both rip and crosscut capability in one tool. Also well suited to collectors, hand tool users, and anyone building a workshop around older Japanese tools rather than modern disposable-blade saws.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ryoba saw?

A ryoba is a traditional Japanese double-edged saw with one tooth line for rip cuts along the grain and the other for crosscuts across the grain.

Is this a modern replaceable-blade saw?

No. This is a vintage fixed-blade Japanese saw with older-style construction.

Is this saw new old stock?

It is new old stock and unused, but as a vintage item it may still show storage wear and age-related marks.

Is the 240mm measurement the blade length?

Yes. The saw is a 240mm ryoba, referring to blade length.

Can this saw be resharpened?

Potentially yes, but Japanese saw teeth require the correct tools and experience. It is not a casual sharpening job.

Is the blade cover included?

Yes. The original black blade cover shown in the photos is included.

Is the maker confirmed?

The cover carries Japanese trade mark text, but I have not verified a reliable published maker history, so it is best sold on the strength of the tool itself rather than an unverified maker claim.
