Description

This Higo pocket knife is handmade in Miki City, Japan by Shigeru Tomita san.

Shigeru Tomita san worked together with his older brother, Mr. Osamu Tomita, for around 60 years. Osamu Tomita san passed away a few years ago, and Mr. Shigeru Tomita now continues making these knives himself using the same traditional method.

This is the sort of knife that appeals immediately once it is in hand. It is simple, compact, and practical, but it also has the forged texture and quiet presence that make traditional Japanese knives hard to replace with modern factory-made alternatives.

The 75mm blade uses white paper steel in warikomi construction, giving you a fine carbon steel edge in a compact everyday format. It is well suited to opening parcels, trimming cord, sharpening pencils, light workshop use, and small precise cutting tasks where a clean edge matters more than bulk.

The handle is iron with a tsuchime hammered finish, giving the knife both grip and character. Combined with the visible lamination line and dark forged look, it feels like a tool made with intent rather than a generic folding knife made to meet a price point.

There is very little excess here, which is exactly the appeal. No gimmicks, no modern over-design, no parts that do not need to be there. Just a straightforward Japanese friction folder with a good edge, solid feel, and the kind of visual depth that rewards a closer look.

Each knife is supplied in a wooden box and ships from Perth.

Stock is limited because these knives are made in small batches. Once the current batch sells out, the next restock may take around two months or more.

What does warikomi mean?

Warikomi is a laminated blade construction where the cutting steel is combined with a softer outer body. It is a traditional Japanese method that balances cutting performance with durability.

What size is this knife?

This is the medium size with a 75mm blade, which makes it a practical option for everyday utility and small precise cutting jobs.

What is tsuchime?

Tsuchime refers to the hammered finish on the handle. It gives the knife extra texture in hand and adds to its forged, workshop-made character.
