Japanese 270 mm topiary clippers — straight and curved variants

Tobisho’s 270 mm topiary clippers are hand-forged in Yamagata, Japan, built for precision shaping of hedges, bonsai and detailed garden work. Both straight blade and curved blade versions are stocked, giving you the choice between crisp flat cuts and controlled rounded trimming. Each pair is finished with Tobisho’s signature red and yellow handles and supplied with a fitted box and bag.

The straight 270 mm clippers excel at flat faces, tight edges and even surfaces. The curved 270 mm version lets you track domes, arcs and spheres smoothly, keeping the cut engaged through the stroke without stepping the surface. Blades are forged from Japanese carbon steel for edge life, and the pinned joint is serviceable so action stays smooth. Neutral balance in hand helps you follow contours without wavering.

  • Sizes stocked: 270 mm straight and curved
  • Steel: Japanese carbon steel (maker grade not listed)
  • Handles: Forged steel loop handles, red and yellow finish
  • Joint: Serviceable pinned joint for smooth travel

After use, wipe sap, dry the blades and oil the pivot. Touch the bevel on a fine whetstone to restore bite before dullness sets in. For stones and strops see our Sharpening range, and browse the full maker line in Tobisho.

Tip: overlap strokes lightly and keep inside faces flat when cleaning so the meeting line stays true.

What Sets Our Tools Apart

Curved blades for rounded forms

is the curved blade option for domes, spheres and soft arcs. The curve keeps more of the edge in contact through the stroke so you can guide the line with less effort and fewer steps. That makes shaping faster and the finish cleaner. The joint is precise and serviceable, and the tidy surface finish helps sap wipe away. If your work leans to rounded forms, the delivers better control with the same dependable feel that runs through Tobisho’s topiary line.

Control and balance at 270 mm

At 270 mm the clippers cover ground quickly while staying steady in hand. The balance feels neutral so you can follow a contour without wavering. Loop handles give a positive grip and the springless action feels smooth. Keep the joint lightly oiled and the stroke stays even. For flat faces and tight corners, pair with the straight so you can match the tool to the job and move faster with better results.

Simple care keeps the cut clean

A short routine protects performance. Wipe away sap, dry the tool and add a tiny drop of oil at the pivot after work. Keep the inside faces flat when cleaning to preserve the meeting line. Touch the bevel lightly on a fine stone before the edge feels dull and you will avoid heavy regrinds. Store locked and dry.

Introducing

Tobisho

Tobisho build specialist pruning tools in Japan with designs refined by practical field use. The sits in their topiary line and focuses on curved blade shaping where domes and soft arcs matter. We stock the brand in Australia and dispatch from Perth, offering local advice on setup, care and sharpening so your tools keep working cleanly.

What sets Tobisho apart is the consistent meeting of the blades and the feel of the joint. The action is smooth, the finish is tidy, and sap wipes away readily so the stroke stays even. In use that means cleaner cuts, rounder profiles and less fatigue across a hedge line. Pair with a fine stone and simple care to keep the edge lively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Curved or straight blades?

Curved blades track domes and arcs more easily. Choose straight for flat faces and crisp corners. Many gardeners keep both and swap by job.

What can I cut with?

Soft and medium hedge growth, topiary flush and fine twigs. For hard, woody stems use a pruner to protect the joint and edge.

How do I avoid flat spots on a dome?

Work with light, overlapping strokes and watch the silhouette. The curved blades help keep the cut engaged and the surface continuous.

How do I keep the action smooth?

Clean sap, dry thoroughly and add a small drop of oil at the pivot. Check tension so the blades meet cleanly without binding.
