Description

Compact Japanese mulberry sickle for light cutting and harvesting

The Takemoto Kikumatsu Mulberry Sickle 90mm is a compact Japanese sickle for grass cutting, light harvesting, wild vegetables, mushrooms and detailed garden work. The 90mm carbon steel blade is small, but it is still made as a sharp working tool rather than a novelty.

This Kuwakiri Kama, also called Kuwakirigama, comes from the mulberry sickle pattern. Its short 90mm blade and 240mm handle make it easy to control in tight areas where a larger sickle is too much tool.

For larger cutting tools, compare the Takemoto Kikumatsu Right-Handed Sickle 180mm or browse Japanese sickles and weeders.

Best suited to

  • Small-scale grass cutting and soft weeds.
  • Light harvesting in garden beds.
  • Wild vegetables and mushrooms.
  • Detailed work where a larger sickle feels awkward.

Who should not buy this

  • Do not buy this if you need a large sickle for fast clearing.
  • Do not buy this for woody stems, roots, digging or levering in soil.
  • Do not buy carbon steel if you want to put the tool away wet or dirty.

Carbon steel care

After use, wipe off soil and moisture, dry the blade properly and apply a light coat of camellia oil before storage. Avoid stones, wire, irrigation parts and hard soil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this mulberry sickle used for?

This compact sickle pattern was originally associated with cutting mulberry leaves, but it is also useful for grass cutting, light harvesting, wild vegetables, mushrooms and detailed garden-bed work.

Is the blade really only 90mm?

Yes. This is a compact 90mm blade with a 240mm handle. It is made for control in tight areas, not for fast clearing over large areas.

Can I use it for digging or roots?

No. This is a cutting tool, not a digging or levering tool. Use a Hori Hori, hoe or mattock for soil, roots and prying work.

Does carbon steel need maintenance?

Yes. Keep the blade dry, wipe it after use and oil it before storage. Carbon steel cuts well, but it can rust if left wet or dirty.
