Description

Serrated Japanese hedge shears for grip and control

Yoshioka Nokokari 180mm shears are made for gardeners who need more bite than a smooth hedge shear can offer. One serrated blade and one straight blade help hold springy green growth during the cut, reducing slip when trimming shrubs, mixed garden growth and hedge edges.

The short-handle design gives more control in close work than longer hedge shears. It bridges the gap between fine topiary shears and heavier loppers: more grip than a detail shear, more finesse than a lopper, and enough compact control for regular garden maintenance.

Nokokari vs standard hedge shears

  • Choose Nokokari when branches or stems tend to slide away from smooth blades.
  • Choose smooth Karikomi shears when you mainly want fast, clean shaping across broad hedge faces.
  • Choose loppers when the branch is too thick to cut cleanly without forcing.

Who should not buy this

  • Do not buy these if you only want the cleanest possible finish on soft hedge faces; smooth hedge shears may suit better.
  • Do not buy these for dry, hard deadwood or oversized branches.
  • Do not buy carbon steel shears if you want a tool that can be stored wet without rust risk.

Carbon steel care expectations

Wipe sap and moisture from the blades after use, dry thoroughly and apply a light coat of camellia oil before storage. Serrated blade shapes can hold sap and debris, so clean them properly after sticky work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Nokokari shears used for?

Nokokari shears are designed for hedge trimming, shrub shaping and cutting tougher green growth where a standard smooth blade shear may slip. The serrated blade helps grip the branch during the cut for better control.

What is different about the Yoshioka No.401?

Our Nokokari shears uses one serrated blade and one straight blade, giving it more bite through springy or fibrous growth. It is also the short handle version, which makes it easier to control in closer, more detailed work.

Are these shears suitable for thick branches?

These shears are intended for green wood up to around 15 mm. For thicker, harder or fully woody branches, a pruning shear, lopper or pruning saw is usually the better tool.

Are these good for fine hedge shaping?

Yes. The short handle design gives better control for precise trimming and shaping, especially when working on shrubs, hedges and mixed garden growth.

How do I care for Nokokari shears?

Wipe the blades clean after use, dry them thoroughly and apply a light coat of camellia oil to help prevent rust. Sharpen as needed and store in a dry place.

Can the blades be sharpened?

Yes. These shears are made to be maintained over time. Regular cleaning, light oiling and proper sharpening will help keep them cutting cleanly.

Why does one blade have serrations?

The serrated blade is designed to grip the material as you cut. This helps reduce slipping and gives more control when cutting tougher or springy growth.
