Start-to-finish spoon carving in a compact Japanese kit

Forged in Miki, Hyogo Prefecture and shipped fast from Perth, the Cypress complete spoon carving knife set from Michi Hamono gives you everything to begin and finish a spoon project. It includes three Blue Paper No.2 knives, Kiso hinoki cypress blanks, waterproof papers, and a slim kiri box for storage.

The set covers shaping, hollowing, and refining. A straight knife handles layout and controlled paring. A flat gouge cleans facets. A round scoop gouge forms the bowl smoothly. Blades are Aogami Blue No.2 for keen edges and steady retention. Each knife is about 175 mm overall with a 30 mm edge, 9 mm wide, set into light birch handles for balance. The included cypress blanks and abrasives help you move from roughing to finish with minimal extra gear.

  • Sizes stocked: Approx. 175 mm OAL; 30 mm blade; 9 mm width per knife
  • Steel stocked: Aogami Blue Paper No.2
  • Other sizes available to order: Enquire for additional carving profiles
  • Handles: Birch wood, light and balanced
  • Joint: Fitted blade to timber handle

Wipe resin and dust after sessions, dry thoroughly, and strop often. Apply a thin oil film if stored for a while. For steel behaviour see Why Forged Carbon Steel?. General care tips are in East West Tools-Care & Maintenance. Build your kit with workshop add-ons in Japanese Woodworking Tools.

Tip: Keep cuts shallow and skew the edge slightly. Skewing lowers cutting resistance and leaves a cleaner surface.

What Sets Our Tools Apart

Complete spoon project in one box

This kit is ready to carve. The straight knife lays out and refines edges, the flat gouge tidies facets and transitions, and the scoop gouge forms the bowl cleanly. Two cypress blanks and waterproof papers take you from shaping to finish without extra purchases. A light, compact kiri box keeps everything together between sessions and fits neatly in a tool bag.

Blue Paper No.2 edge you can trust

Aogami Blue Paper No.2 is chosen for its balance of wear resistance and sharpenability. It takes a crisp apex that stays working through dense grain and tricky end grain. Regular stropping keeps edges keen. When it is time to rehone, the steel responds quickly and returns to a fine polish, reducing tear-out and sanding time.

Made in Miki, tuned for control

Each knife is compact at about 175 mm overall with a 30 mm, 9 mm wide edge. The short length helps control and reduces hand fatigue during hollowing. Birch handles are light and neutral in hand. Profiles are selected to cover spoon shaping, hollowing, and finishing with minimal tool changes, which speeds learning and improves consistency.
