Description

Finish your own Katsura wooden kuksa

A practical weekend project shipped from Perth, Australia. This Michi Hamono kit supplies a semi-processed Katsura kuksa blank with the inner bowl already hollowed. Use the included half-round rasp and wet-and-dry papers to shape the exterior and handle, then oil for service.

Michi Hamono prepares the blank so you focus on design and surface quality. Katsura is a fine-grained hardwood that carves cleanly and takes a smooth finish. The half-round rasp removes stock quickly on curves and flats, while #150, #240, and #400 papers refine the surface to drink-ready smoothness. No chisels are required. Add a carving knife later if you want to crisp edges or add facets. This kit pairs well with tools from our Japanese Carving Knives and shop essentials in Japanese Woodworking Tools.

After shaping, wipe dust, then apply a food-safe drying oil. Re-oil as needed. Hand wash only, and avoid soaking or dishwashers.

Tip: Keep rasp strokes long and consistent around the rim, then break the edge lightly at 45° before final sanding.

Introducing

Michi Hamono Crafting Kit

Based in Miki, Hyogo, Michi Hamono makes specialist tools for wood carving and craft. This kuksa kit reflects that focus on accessible craft. The Katsura blank is semi processed so the inner bowl is done, leaving you to shape the exterior and handle. It is a satisfying entry to handwork that produces a cup you will actually use.

Attention to material and process keeps this kit beginner friendly without feeling toy like. Katsura cuts predictably and sands to a fine surface. The half round rasp removes stock quickly, then the included papers take you to a food safe finish. Add a small knife later if you want crisp facets or decorative details.

What Sets Our Tools Apart

Project-Ready Kit

This is the simplest way to make a kuksa without a full carving tool roll. You receive a one piece Katsura blank with the inner bowl already hollowed, a half round rasp for shaping, three sheets of wet and dry paper, and printed instructions. The blank carves cleanly and finishes smoothly, so you can concentrate on form, grip and rim comfort. No chisels are required, which makes this a low risk first project that still delivers a durable, everyday cup.

How to Shape and Refine

Start by outlining your handle profile with pencil. Use the rasp’s flat side on flats and the curved side on radii. Keep strokes long and even, working both directions to keep symmetry. Move through #150 to remove facets, #240 to refine, then #400 before oil. Break sharp edges lightly to avoid splintering at the rim and handle hole. If you want extra definition on facets, add a small carving knife from our Japanese Carving Knives collection.

Care, Food Safety, Longevity

After sanding, apply a food safe drying oil such as tung, walnut, or boiled linseed following the label. Let each coat cure, then buff. Hand wash only and dry promptly. Avoid soaking, dishwashers, and harsh detergents. Re-oil when the surface looks dry or feels rough. Small checks can be reduced by keeping the cup out of direct sun and by maintaining the oil finish.
