Description

Japanese bypass loppers for branches beyond secateurs

Yoshioka Araki bypass loppers are made for clean live-branch pruning where secateurs are too small but a saw would be excessive. They suit fruit trees, citrus, ornamental trees and general garden pruning when extra reach and leverage matter.

These are a step up from hand secateurs, not a replacement for a pruning saw. Use them for live branch cuts where a clean bypass action matters. If the branch is dry, gritty or too large to cut cleanly without forcing, move to a saw instead.

Loppers vs secateurs

  • Choose loppers when you need more leverage, more reach or two-handed control.
  • Choose secateurs for smaller stems, roses, citrus tips and frequent one-handed pruning.
  • If you are mostly doing fine pruning, start with Japanese secateurs and pruning shears. If you are often reaching for thicker live branches, these loppers make sense.

Who should not buy this

  • Do not buy these for dry deadwood, wire or gritty material.
  • Do not buy these if most of your work is small, one-handed pruning.
  • Do not force them through oversized branches; use a Japanese pruning saw when the cut is beyond lopper capacity.

Carbon steel care expectations

Clean sap and moisture after use, dry the joint and apply a light coat of camellia oil before storage. Keep the cutting edge clean and avoid twisting through cuts, as bypass tools work best when the branch is cut cleanly in line with the blade.

What Sets Our Tools Apart

Bypass precision

The Araki No.123 loppers are designed to deliver a clean slicing action on live branches. The bypass design reduces crushing, leaving a smooth wound that heals faster. The sharp Aogami cutting blade glides past the SK-5 counter blade, providing control and accuracy in every cut. This makes them well suited for orchards, vineyards, and detailed garden maintenance where branch health and appearance matter as much as efficiency.

Japanese workshop build

Yoshioka Hamono loppers are forged and finished in Miki, Hyogo Prefecture, a traditional center of tool making. The Araki No.123 reflects this heritage, pairing precise blade grinding with hardwood handles and a serviceable joint. These details ensure balance in use, predictable blade closure, and durability under regular pruning loads, making them a dependable choice for demanding horticultural work in Australian conditions.

Care and edge life

Maintain performance by wiping the blades clean after use and applying light oil to the joint and edges. Touch up the Aogami cutting blade as needed with a fine stone. The SK-5 counter blade resists shock but also benefits from cleaning. Following these routines will extend edge life and keep cuts smooth.
