Frequently Asked Questions

I’m new, what are the best first tools to buy?

For gardening, start with secateurs for everyday pruning, a weeding sickle or soil knife for weeds and planting, and a sharpening stone to keep edges keen. For woodworking, a ryōba saw, marking knife, and a 1000–3000 grit water stone form a versatile starter kit.

What steel are these made from, and what’s the difference?

Many blades use high-carbon steels such as Shirogami (White) and Aogami (Blue). White steel takes a razor edge quickly and is easy to sharpen; Blue steel adds alloying for better edge retention and abrasion resistance. Some entry tools use SK carbon or stainless for easy care. All benefit from regular touch-ups on a water stone.

How do I care for and store hand-forged tools?

Brush off soil or dust, dry thoroughly, and wipe steel with a light oil (e.g., camellia) after use. Avoid cutting wire or hitting stone. Touch up edges with a medium water stone (1000–1200) and finish with a finer grit if desired. Oil wooden handles periodically and store tools dry, out of the weather.
