Description

Compact Banshu Piccolo sickle for tight garden work

The Takemoto Banshu Piccolo Sickle 90mm is a compact Japanese sickle for grass cutting, light harvesting, soft weeds and detailed garden work. The blade is small, but the improved Banshu pattern is made with thicker material to resist bending and keep a useful working angle for brushing and cutting grass.

This Piccolo model uses a 90mm carbon steel blade with a short 135mm oak handle. It is easier to place in tight garden beds than a long-handled sickle and suits close, controlled work where speed is less important than accuracy.

For a longer 90mm option, compare the Takemoto Kikumatsu Mulberry Sickle 90mm. For full-size options, browse Japanese sickles and weeders.

Best suited to

  • Grass cutting and soft weeds in tight spots.
  • Light harvesting in vegetable beds.
  • Small garden cleanup jobs where a full-size sickle is too large.
  • Cutting light rope or plastic garden string when needed.

Who should not buy this

  • Do not buy this if you need a long-handled sickle for fast clearing.
  • Do not buy this for woody stems, roots, digging or levering in soil.
  • Do not buy carbon steel if you want to put the tool away wet or dirty.

Carbon steel care

After use, wipe off soil and moisture, dry the blade properly and apply a light coat of camellia oil before storage. Avoid stones, wire, irrigation parts and hard soil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this Piccolo sickle used for?

This compact Japanese sickle is made for grass cutting, soft weeds, light harvesting and close garden-bed work where a full-size sickle is too large.

Why does it have a compact handle?

The 135mm oak handle keeps the tool compact and easy to control in tight areas. It suits precise work near plants rather than large-area grass work.

Can I use it for digging or roots?

No. This is a cutting tool, not a digging or levering tool. Use a Hori Hori, hoe or mattock for soil, roots and prying work.

Does carbon steel need maintenance?

Yes. Keep the blade dry, wipe it after use and oil it before storage. Carbon steel cuts well, but it can rust if left wet or dirty.
