Description

Keep sharpening stones flat and cutting properly

The Grooved Flattening Stone #60 is used to level waterstones that have become hollow or uneven from sharpening. A flat sharpening stone makes edge work more predictable, especially when maintaining Japanese knives, carving tools, chisels and garden blades.

The coarse #60 surface removes material quickly, while the grooves help carry away slurry and loose grit as you work. Use it with water and check the stone surface as you flatten. Once the sharpening stone is level, rinse both stones clean and let them dry before storage.

This is not a finishing stone for sharpening an edge. It is a maintenance stone for keeping your sharpening stones usable and accurate.

Use it with the Naniwa Gouken Deluxe 1000 grit whetstone or the Naniwa Gouken Hayabusa 4000 grit whetstone. Browse the full Japanese tool care and sharpening range for stones, oil, rust removal and blade cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What stones can I flatten with #60 grit?

Use it on waterstones, especially coarse to medium grits. For very fine stones, follow with a finer lapping surface if you want a smoother finish.

Do I use it wet or dry?

Wet only. Soak both the flattening stone and the waterstone before use. Work evenly across the full surface to keep edges square and avoid gouging.

How often should I flatten my waterstones?

Check with a pencil grid before each sharpening session. If the grid wears unevenly after a few strokes, flatten until the marks disappear for consistent contact.

Will the grooves scratch my stones?

No. The grooves help channel slurry and reduce suction. The #60 grit will leave a coarse surface that conditions the stone; a few normal sharpening passes refine it.
