Description

Two forged Japanese garden tools for firmer soil, roots and close digging

The Azui Tough Ground Set combines the Azui No.102 Japanese Ika-Gata Hand Hoe and Azui No.106 Japanese Pick Mattock for garden work that needs more bite than a light cultivator.

The No.102 uses a broad cutting blade and four forged tines for shallow weeding, loosening soil and preparing planting areas. The No.106 adds a narrow mattock blade and pointed pick for compacted patches, close digging and controlled work around stubborn roots.

Purchased separately, the two tools total $115. This set ships together at $103.50, saving $11.50. Browse more Azui Seisakusho tools, compare the wider Japanese digging tools range, or see all Japanese garden tools.

Best suited to

  • Firmer or compacted garden soil.
  • Breaking the surface before planting.
  • Shallow weeding and bed preparation.
  • Controlled digging around roots and established plants.
  • Gardeners who want a cutting hoe and a more forceful mattock rather than two similar tools.

Who should not buy this

  • Do not buy this if you need long-handled tools for standing work.
  • Do not buy this for demolition, heavy rock breaking or levering large roots.
  • Do not buy this if you only need light surface cultivation; the Soil Preparation Duo is the better fit.
  • Do not buy this if you want stainless, maintenance-free tools.

Care

Knock soil from both forged heads after use, wipe them dry and apply a light coat of camellia oil before longer storage. Do not use the tines, mattock blade or pick as pry bars against rocks or concrete. Browse Japanese tool care and sharpening products for oil and rust-prevention supplies, or compare it with the Azui Soil Preparation Duo for lighter cultivation work.
