Ikeuchi Kogatana: The Precision Japanese Woodworking Knife

Ikeuchi carving knives are hand forged in small batches at a facility operated by three generations of master craftsmen. Since 1953 the family has been making knives in Miki City, Japan, renowned for its tool making industry since the Edo period.

Discover the exceptional precision and versatility of the kogatana, a traditional Japanese woodworking knife designed for intricate tasks. This compact tool is a must-have for woodworkers, craftspeople, and anyone who values fine detail.

Specifications:

  • Blade Steel: Aogami Blue 2 (Japanese High Carbon Steel)
  • Blade Length: 60mm
  • Overall Length: 155mm
  • Handle Material: Cherry Wood

Use Cases: This versatile Kogatana is ideal for a variety of precision tasks, including:

  • Detailed wood carving and shaping
  • Lino cutting and printmaking
  • Precise leather cutting and skiving
  • Marking and scoring various materials
  • Fine craft work.

Key Features that Set the Kogatana Apart:

  • Compact Design: The kogatana's small size allows for unparalleled control and accuracy, making it perfect for delicate carvings, model making, and fine detail work.
  • Laminated Steel Blade: Crafted with a core of hard, high-carbon steel sandwiched between layers of softer iron, the blade offers exceptional sharpness, durability, and resistance to breakage.
  • Single-Bevel Edge: The single-bevel design enables precise, clean cuts, ideal for working along straight lines and edges with remarkable accuracy.
  • Traditional Wooden Handle: Experience a comfortable and secure grip with the classic wooden handle, designed for extended use and optimal control.
  • Multifunctional Versatility: From intricate wood carving and bamboo crafting to precise card cutting and even pencil sharpening, the kogatana is a versatile tool for a wide range of applications.

Care Instructions: To maintain the blade's sharpness and prevent rust, clean and dry the knife after each use. Regularly oil the blade with camellia oil or a similar rust-preventative oil. Keep the knife sharp using whetstones. Due to the high carbon steel, it is very important to keep the blade dry, to prevent rust.
