Higonokami Aogami Steel Knife
The Higonokami: A Classic Japanese Pocket Knife
The Higonokami, a traditional Japanese pocket knife with a rich history. Originating in 1894, this unique knife was created by Mr. Tasaburo Shigematsu, a hardware wholesaler inspired by a design he brought back from Kagoshima. He ingeniously added a small lever, the "Chikiri" (tail), allowing the blade and sheath to fold neatly.
The name "Higonokami" pays homage to the Kumamoto region (formerly Higo), where Mr. Shigematsu found a thriving customer base, significantly boosting sales. Over time, the blade's design evolved, transitioning from the earlier, sharper bamboo-leaf tip to the now-standard square shape. While double-edged blades were once common, the Higonokami is known for its single-edged, functional design. Early sheaths featured both vertical and cross-folding styles, though today, vertical folding is a custom option.
A pivotal moment in the Higonokami's history occurred in 1911 at the First Kobe Export Articles Competitive Exhibition. Crown Prince (later Emperor Taisho) was captivated by the knife and purchased one, further cementing its popularity across Japan.
The Higonokami remains a beloved and practical utility knife, celebrated for its simple construction, reliable performance, and affordable price. It's a piece of Japanese craftsmanship that continues to impress with its enduring design.
