Description

A better way to care for Japanese garden tools

This Japanese Garden Tool Maintenance Kit is made for keeping secateurs, shears and small pruning tools clean, smooth and ready to use.

It includes the essentials for regular care: sap removal, rust prevention, light cleaning, oiling and edge touch ups. The kit now comes packed in a handmade wooden toolbox designed by East West Tools, with dedicated internal storage for each item.

Instead of loose bottles and stones rolling around in a plastic box, everything has its own place. The toolbox includes dedicated storage for the camellia oil, blade cleaner, cloth, rust eraser, sharpening stone and a pair of 200mm Japanese secateurs. The removable lid sections help keep the contents secure while still making the kit easy to open, use and pack away.

Use it after pruning sessions, after sap-heavy work, or before storing carbon steel tools. A simple routine of cleaning, drying and oiling will help prevent rust, reduce friction at the pivot and keep your tools cutting cleanly for longer.

Pair this kit with Japanese secateurs, hedge shears and other carbon steel garden tools. It is especially useful for tools used on roses, fruit trees, citrus, lavender, rosemary and general pruning work.

Tip: A quick clean and oil after use is much easier than removing rust later.

Maintenance

After each use, wipe down the blades and remove sap or dirt. Dry the tool properly, then apply a small amount of camellia oil to the blade and pivot.

Use the rust eraser only when needed. Touch up the edge lightly with the stone when cutting effort increases.

Store the kit dry and keep the lids fitted when not in use.

Pair this kit with the Japanese tool care and sharpening range for refills, with Japanese secateurs and pruning shears for regular pruning tools, or with Japanese shears and loppers for larger garden tools. Clean after sap-heavy work, wipe dry, then oil lightly before storage to prevent corrosion.

Tip: A few light strokes to refresh the bevel beats a heavy regrind later. Little and often keeps the edge true.

This maintenance kit supports that approach for everyday garden tools, giving home gardeners and professionals a simple way to clean, protect, and refresh edges between full sharpenings.

Japanese cutting tools reward regular care. Clean blades resist sap build up, oiled pivots stay smooth, and a light touch up keeps cuts crisp. What Sets Our Tools Apart

Routine Cleaning

A fast clean prevents long repairs. After pruning, remove loose debris, then wipe blades with a soft cloth. Treat pitch and sap with a suitable cleaner, working from spine to edge to avoid rolling the bevel. Dry thoroughly to stop moisture creep along the joint. Finish with a light oil film across the blade and a drop at the pivot. Regular cleaning keeps the action smooth and reduces the effort needed for every cut. It also protects carbon steels used in many Japanese tools from surface corrosion during storage.

Edge Touch Up

Touch the bevel lightly rather than waiting for the tool to get blunt. Hold a consistent angle, work from heel to tip in short strokes, and remove any wire burr with a gentle pass on the flat. Two or three controlled strokes are usually enough to restore bite between major sharpenings. Keeping the geometry true preserves tool life and avoids removing excess steel. If the edge has chips or flat spots, stop and plan a full sharpen rather than forcing it in the garden.

Oil and Storage

Oil protects edges and joints from oxygen and moisture. After cleaning, apply a thin, even coat to blades and place a small drop in the pivot. Wipe away excess to avoid attracting grit. Store tools dry, out of damp sheds, and avoid leaving them wrapped in wet cloths. For carbon steel, a quick oil before and after use pays off in smooth cuts and easier maintenance. Pair this routine with periodic checks for loose fasteners and alignment so your tools are always ready.
