How do I set up a specialised kanna for first use?

Check the sole (or intentional curve) and take light passes to true if needed. Fit the chipbreaker close to the edge (about 0.3–0.5 mm) and set the blade with gentle taps. For chamfer planes, confirm the guide or fence is square and slides cleanly. Aim for fine, controlled shavings.

Sharpening and care tips?

Hone on water stones (1000 → 3000/4000 → 6000–8000). Keep the back (ura) flat and support the hollow; avoid over-polishing. Wipe dry after use and protect with a thin coat of camellia or light mineral oil. Store the dai out of direct heat so it doesn’t warp.
