Description

Japanese hook carving knife for spoon bowls and tight hollows

This Michi Hamono hook carving knife is designed for spoon carving, small bowls and controlled hollowing work. The short curved blade focuses the cut, making it useful for shaping the inside of spoon bowls and other tight concave forms.

Made in Miki, Japan, it uses Aogami No.2 laminated steel for strong edge retention and clean cutting feel. The compact 160mm form and zelkova handle give secure control for careful pull cuts and thumb-assisted strokes.

Hook knife vs carving set

  • Choose this hook knife if you specifically need to hollow spoon bowls or small concave shapes.
  • Choose a full carving set if you want multiple profiles for general shaping, paring and detail work.
  • If you are starting from scratch, compare the Cypress complete spoon carving set.

Who should not buy this

  • Do not buy this as your only carving tool if you need straight paring, layout or general shaping profiles.
  • Do not buy this for prying, twisting or rough stock removal.
  • Do not buy carbon steel if you want a tool that can be stored wet without care.

Care expectations

Wipe clean after each session and dry thoroughly. Strop regularly to maintain sharpness, and re-sharpen on waterstones when stropping no longer restores the edge. Store dry with the blade cap in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the hook radius used for?

A small radius focuses the cut for spoon bowls and tight hollows, allowing precise material removal with controlled pull strokes and clean surfaces.

Is the steel hard to sharpen?

No. Aogami No.2 steel takes a keen edge and responds well to stropping. Refresh on waterstones only when stropping no longer restores sharpness.

Does it come with a blade cover?

Yes. Each knife includes a fitted protective cap for safe storage and transport.

Can I carve both green and seasoned wood?

Yes. Green wood carves more easily. For seasoned wood, take lighter passes and strop more often to maintain a crisp edge.
